Metal ridge, ordered in 10 foot pieces
A standing-seam or exposed-fastener ridge is not a shingle bundle. The estimator treats one piece as 10 linear feet. Waste is added first, then the count rounds up to a whole piece. A short offcut does not stretch across the peak.
A 40 ft gable is 44 ft with 10% waste, which is 5 pieces. A 40 by 30 hip at 6:12 is 100 ft of ridge and hips, 115 ft with 15% waste, which is 12 pieces. Open that hip in metal.
Buy a full extra length rather than leaving the last foot to an offcut. The piece has to match the panel profile. A shingle cap does not lock into a standing seam.
